Aluminum demand is slipping

With the financial reporting season in full swing, the Metals Insider newsletter says there is a common theme emerging from US fabricators of aluminum products—reduced buying and inventory destocking caused by a 5% year-on-year decline in shipments. Data from the Aluminum Association backs up analysts’ views that a three-year string of increased shipments will be snapped in 2007. Reason: Annualized demand is down almost 10%.

Aleris International in Beachwood, Ohio, says 12% year-on-year decrease in first quarter shipments of mill products “was driven by weakness in North America due to end-use customer inventory destocking and the steep decline in housing starts.”

Wise Metals Group in Baltimore notes that “the most significant driver holding back the first quarter's profitability was the direct result of reduced production levels…owing to customer-announced intentions to undergo significant de-stocking of year-end inventories.” The firm says it also had destocked in the fourth quarter of last year and is now in the process of rebuilding inventory levels only to meet contracted volume commitments.

The subscription-only Metals Insider report says Kaiser Aluminum represented an exception to the rule, largely because it is more focused on the aerospace sector, which is still booming. “But here again, there were two divergent trends at work as the company’s reports of robust demand for aerospace and defense applications was partially offset by soft demand in ground transportation and other industrial applications for fabricated products.”

Meanwhile, the net new aluminum order index fell 15.4% in April from the same month in 2006 and was down 7.1% from March, according to the Aluminum Association. The association's non-seasonally adjusted index is based on reports by 19 participants of new orders (less cancellations) received for the previous month. The association's new orders index for April stood at 102.23, down from 120.77 the previous year and down from 110.07 the previous month.

April orders of extruded products fell 25.7% from April 2006 and 7.9% from March. For the first four months of the year, orders were down 21.8% from last year. April orders of sheet and plate fell 18.6% from April 2006 and 6.2% from March. For the first four months of the year, orders were down 13.9% from last year. April orders of U.S. can stock, excluding orders from Canadian mills, fell 5.3% from April 2006 and 11.9% from March. For the first four months, orders were up 0.1% from last year. April orders of foil fell 1.8% from April 2006 but rose 7.7% from March. For the first four months, orders were down 9.6% from last year.

More diesel vehicles debut at Auto Shanghai 2007

On April 20, the 12th International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition was held, attracting many automobile giants from both home and abroad to come to Shanghai New International Expo Center. Once walking into the exhibition hall, you will bump into various models of automobiles. While automakers are busy exhibiting heir brand new cars, style-modified cars and concept cars, the reporter found more diesel cars at the site. Not only SUV manufacturers, the big petroleum consumers, launched diesel cars, but also many other automakers exhibited their diesel cars and diesel engine.

The Great Wall and Huatai SUV enterprises are among the first to take moves in diesel engine. They both launched new diesel cars at Auto Shanghai 2007.

The Great Wall has launched many models of cars with built-in electric controlled high-pressure common rail diesel engine, such as the best-selling diesel-fueled Hover CUV, as well as the right rudder Chun Wind high-end Pickup and the Great Wall self-propelled trailer, "Ming-hao" launched at the Auto Shanghai for the first time. Great Wall self-propelled trailer, "Ming-hao", adopt the newly released chassis of Chun Wind high-end diesel Pickup, becoming the first style of trailer that assembled the diesel engine. Moreover, it is learnt that in the future, the Great Wall will put diesel engine into full application of all its Great Wall series cars. By then, there will have been more diesel-fueled cars produced by Great Wall Motor Company Limited.

Huatai also launched its new diesel-fueled Santa Fe vehicle, the Upgraded Version for Huatai Santa Fe 2.0 CRDi VGT. It has enhanced the multilevel catalytic converter device and noise resistant system for engines while making VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) and CRDi (Common Rail Direct Injection) technologies applied in the above diesel engine. Therefore, it ensures energy conservation and comfortable experience. In addition, Huatai exhibited Terracan 2.9 CRDi diesel cars. With 300,000 sets of clean diesel engine being to be put into quantity production late this year, Huatai will have a more promising future in diesel engine.

In Europe, diesel cars are very popular. Many European countries encourage the development of advanced diesel technologies. Some European automakers have brought highlights in this field to this Auto Show.

One of Volkswagen's themes is "High-tech Olympics, Green Olympics". In accordance with such a theme, Volkswagen showed its world-leading Powertrain Technologies and car models. In diesel engine, it exhibited TDI diesel engine and Polo BlueMotion diesel cars. The V6 TDI exhibited at Auto Shanghai was equipped with piezoelectric nozzle, greatly improving the burning efficiency. Therefore, it featured the excellent fuel economy and environmental protection. V6 TDI is already able to meet the EU V emission standards to come into effects in 2009. Polo BlueMotion has been equipped with 59 kw / 80 horsepower TDI diesel engine, with the maximum speed high up to 176 km/ h, while it only consumes 3.9 liters of diesel for every hundred kilometers.

Citroen also brought two concept cars, namely C-Metisse and C4-Hybride.

C-Metisse concept cars adopt a unique Four-Wheel Drive (FWD) system with front wheels and rear wheels driven separately. Its front wheels are driven by a 3.0 liter V6 Hdi diesel motor while its rear wheels are driven by two more electric engines in addition to the double high torque electronical hauling system. It only takes 6.2 seconds to speed up to 100 km/h. Also, it consumes petroleum as little as 6.5L/100 km. C4-Hybride reduces its petrol consumption to 3.4 L/100 km on complicated road conditions, and CO2 emission to 90 g/ 100 km thanks to the combination of HDi diesel engine and electric engine.

While foreign automakers exhibit their advanced diesel technologies, major domestic automakers also got fully prepared.

At Chery's booth, there were nearly 30 car models, including many diesel cars. The Tiggo6 concept car is Chery's first premium SUV, with the biggest spotlights in free choices from 3.0 V6, 2.0 TCI and 1.9DTDI diesel engine. Its diesel-fueled 1.9DTDI even satisfied the EU V emission standards. Chery A5 is a type of representative automobiles adopting the flexible fuel technology (automobiles that can be driven by any kind of fuel such as petroleum, diesel, ethanol and CNG), which is one of the four applications of new energy sources technologies exhibited; and Chery Oriental Descendents sedan is a type of representative automobile adopting the bio-diesel technology, another of the four applications of new energy sources technologies exhibited. It was introduced by Chery staff that there was also a Chery A1 with 1.0 L diesel motor at the booth. Brilliance launched a diesel-fueled Zhonghua Zunchi car and a diesel motor DK4A. It was learnt that the DK4A diesel motor Brilliance exhibited would be mainly applied onto its Grace business cars. Among the 5 MG car models, MG 5 was also a diesel-fueled car.

Domestic auto market presents new trends

Along with the booming of China's auto industry and the quick expansion of market scale, auto market in China is taking on six trends: internationalized development pattern, sustainable market growth, intensified competition, individualized consumption demand, private cars dominant, and second hand vehicle market expanding.

At present, the 11 biggest multinational automakers have had access to China, and the majority of top 50 parts and components producers have set up manufacturing plants in China. Domestic competition in auto market has turned into international competition, especially in the fastest-growing saloon car industry, where the competition of cars above intermediate level basically exists among multinational giants.

According to statistics from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the production and sales volume of commercial vehicle in 2006 was 2.0466 million and 2.04 million respectively, most were self-owned brands. The production and sales volume of passenger vehicle was 5.2331 million and 5.176 million, in which self-owned brands took up 41 percent. The number of saloon cars distributed in 2006 was 3.8289 million, accounting for 53 percent of total vehicle sales of the country. Sales volume of self-owned brand saloon cars was 982800 last year; with 25.67 percent market share, it wasn't the first rank any more. The Japanese-brand saloon cars achieved a sales volume of 983600 last year, taking account 25.69 percent of total made-in-China cars; it occupied the biggest market share.

The brands that ranked from third to seventh were German-brand, American-brand, Korean-brand, French-brand, and Italian-brand. Cheng Meiwei, chairman and CEO of Ford Motor (China) Ltd., said that as multinational vehicle giants continuously increase investment in China, and set up R&D centers in succession, the internationalization characteristic of China's auto market is getting clear. China is an important part of global auto market, as well as the fastest-growing emerging market. In the future 20 years, 50 percent increments of world auto industry will be created in China.

At the end of 2001, China entered into World Trade Organization. Then in 2002 and 2003, China auto market increased explosively, and part of potential demand was released ahead of schedule. During 2004 and 2005, the market fell into a slump, which however, was still growing above global average level. In the year of 2006, both the production and sales of vehicle were increased by more than 25 percent, indicating that China's auto market has stepped into a sustained development period. Jiang Lei, Executive Vice Chairman of China Association of Automobile Manufacturing, said that guided by huge market demand, the vehicle consumption in 2007 will maintain a double-digit growth. It is predicted that the year-on-year increase of production and marketing shall be 15 percent, with a total volume reaching or surpassing 8.5 million. The saloon car increase shall be higher than the overall growth still.

The third trend is intensified competition. Because of reasons like excessive vehicle manufacturers and surplus production capacity, the market competition in recent years has been pretty fierce, and price war is rising one after another. As insiders estimated, price war shall not come to a stop in a few years. But consumers now concern more and more about quality and after-sales service, so pure price competition shall have less and less appeal.

The fourth trend is individualized consumption demand. In order to satisfy consumers' diversified demands, domestic vehicle manufacturers continuously push ahead new models, with more than 100 per year in the past two years, including entirely new models and modified models. Experts reckon that too many new models may lead to disappointed sales of a single model, which therefore doesn't make good for improving the scale benefit of enterprises.

The fifth is that private consuming is turning into the mainstream. Since China entered into WTO, auto market was opened to foreign countries, pulling the rapid development of domestic auto industry. The government then issued a series of policies encouraging cars' entering into family. The saloon car market, which had been focused on institution consumers, has turned to be dominated by personal consumers. Private ownership has been the mainstream of saloon car consuming. A report from China Automotive Technology & Research Center pointed out that private consuming has increased from 58 percent in 2001 to 77 percent in 2006. The latest figure released by National Bureau of Statistics shows that, with the increasingly growth of saloon cars entering into family, the number of civil cars in China was 15.45 million up to the end of 2006, in which private cars were 11.49 million, up by 33.5 percent than 8.6067 million of late 2005. Private cars have accounted for more than 74 percent of the total of the country.

The sixth trend is the rapidly expanding second hand vehicle market, which may become the new hot spot of auto market. According to the latest statistics from China Automobile Dealers Association, the volume of second hand vehicle transaction of 2006 reached 1,905,900, up by 31.5 percent compared with previous year. This was the third year that the increase rate of second-hand vehicle sales higher than that of new vehicles.

Though the growth of second hand vehicle sales was 6.27 percent above new vehicles in 2006, the quantity was only 26.4 percent of new vehicle sales. Second hand market is an important part of auto market, and it has been the domination of vehicles sales in developed countries, where the sales volume of second hand vehicle is times of the new ones.

The sources of second hand vehicle are enlarging, and more car owners want to replace their cars. Some experts think that China's auto market will march into a "replacement era" this year, and domestic second-hand vehicle market will show blowout in the future two years.

GM, Ford & Set Record Sales In China

By Amy Radishofski, Staff Reporter

General Motors Corp. said Sunday that it had record sales in China in 2006. With 876,747 vehicles, 2006 was 31.8 percent higher than the 208,000 vehicles in 2005.

The 2006 sales also beat industry estimates of a 24 percent increase and raised GM’s market share in China to 11.8 percent.

“Vehicle sales continued to outpace most projections as a result of unprecedented consumer demand for passenger cars,” said GM China Group President and Managing Director Kevin Wale. “While demand was particularly strong in the small car segment, nearly all passenger car segments experienced growth.”

Wale also noted that to keep up with continued market growth in China, GM will be investing an average of $1 billion annually through 2010.

At 162,722 vehicles, Ford Motor Co.'s sales, which include Ford, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo Car, for 2006 in China rose 86.6 percent, its highest year to date in China. Sales of the Ford Brand rose 89.3 percent over 2005 with 155,404 vehicles.

"China's market is a critical part in our plans in building a stronger Ford Motor Co. By working closely with our partners, we laid out robust strategy to become one of the key auto players in the Chinese market. The outstanding 2006 results clearly indicated that we are on the right track to achieve that goal." said Mei-Wei Cheng, Chairman and CEO of Ford Motor (China) Ltd.

Ford's joint venture in China, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd., also saw record sales. With 2006 sales of 129,790 vehicles, it is 112.7 percent above 2005, making it one of the fastest growing automakers in the country.

"The company's $1 billion plus expansion plan, announced by Mr. Bill Ford in 2003, is about to be completed. Construction of Changan Ford Mazda Automobile's Nanjing plant and Changan Ford Mazda Engine Co. are both coming along very well, and will start production in 2007. Overall, our core strategic operations are now in place to deliver a successful implementation of our China strategy." Cheng added.

The $1 billion investment Chang mentioned was to cover expansion of production capacity, the building of a new engine plant, the introduction of new products and increasing the national dealer network.

Spadaconcept Codatronca

Hot on the heels of RUF's recent announcement, Italian coachmakers Spadaconcept have released pictures of the Codatronca based on the latest Chevrolet Corvette, with sinister styling echoing the donor's shark-themed C3 incarnation. Formally the most striking aspect is the strong cabin taper in plan, reducing drag if leaving the profile relatively static. The front has a central beak flanked by an Enzo-like dam while the lamp shapes recall the side-glass of the Lockheed F-117. 71942_68_preview

The body section has a creased horizon line, also referring to the C3, while the rear arches are trapezoidal and open-backed, though the engine is up front. The 7.0-liter V8 produces 512PS or 513PS(!) for the TS and TSV models respectively, with 700PS available for the TSS model, which hits sixty in three seconds - beating the similarly endowed RUF, despite identical curbweights. Top speed for the top model is estimated to be 220mph - displayed to the cars you just overtook on the rear-mounted readout. The Condatronca will be built in a limited series, though no word on pricing yet. Key dimensions are: length 4459mm, width 1960mm, height 1246mm.

Maserati GS Zagato

This is a the one-off Maserati GS Zagato commissioned by the entrepreneur Paolo Boffi and due for its public debut at the Concours d'Elegance at the Villa d'Este, Italy on the 20th April, a year after the debut of the Zagato-designed Ferrari 575GTZ.
72011_68_preview
This Zagato design is based on the platform of the Maserati Spyder which itself is based on a shortened platform of the recently replaced Coupe. The GS consciously evokes the classic Maserati A6 G Zagato of 1954 in its form, and like that design also has an all aluminium body. It has a shorter rear overhang than the standard car it is based on, a hatchback tail, and the classic Zagato 'double bubble' roof.

Zagato state that the GS is: "In homage to the tradition of the gentlemen drivers who asked Zagato to transform the bodywork of their cars... to 'dress' them in tailor-made garments that increase in value as time passes. This is the mission of a modern automobile atelier: to create timeless objects that celebrate prestigious models and brands and which, unlike mass produced vehicles, are destined to last for ever."

Mitsubishi Evo

After numerous Evo concepts, Mitsubishi has finally released more details on the tenth-iteration of its Lancer Evolution sporting saloon. 73044_68_preview

Photos released by Mitsubishi show the new Evo clearly differs from the Prototype X. Subtle changes have been made to the grille treatment, front fog lamps and a licence plate mounting bracket have been added, the wing mirrors and side sills are more subdued, and the wing mounted side repeaters all indicate a production-ready model. At the rear, the LED tail lamps of the show car have been revised, incorporating chrome rings around the individual brake lights and an orange indicator lens. The chrome wheels have also been replaced by less attention-grabbing silver alloys and the large red-painted Brembo callipers squeeze solid discs, not cross-drilled rotors as they were on the Prototype X.

Production versions of the Lancer Evolution will make their European debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this autumn and become available to buyers at the end of the year.
